Eli Benson, son of Elijah Benson and Elizabeth Ann Janes b. Feb. l5, 1863 in Grate's Cove. Eli was a carpenter and resided at l7 Parade Street, St. John's, with his mother Elizabeth Benson. He died on the l9th of April, 1899, this was recorded in the April 20th l899 edition of The Evening Telegram, he was 36 years of age. His burial records are at the Gower Street United Church. Eli's wife and 4 children were left to mourn their sad loss. Eli married Tryphena Churchill, daughter of Ezra Churchill, merchant of Portugal Cove. The baptism records of the Gower Street church has the following 4 children to Eli and Tryphena Benson: Annie Paul, 1893; Gertrude Churchill, 1895; Mamie Victoria, 1897; and William Curtis, 1899; all born in St. John's.
