I'm not a Benson, but I am a McCree and thus found your post. I can't say for sure where the McCree came from in this name, but given his father was from North Carolina, most likely it comes from the McCree family that was in Mecklenburg and Cabarrus Co, NC about that time. They trace back to William McCree, b. 1714 in County Down, Ireland, 10/30/1789 in Mecklenburg Co, NC. Perhaps if you have more info on the parents and grandparents of James McCree Benson, I could match it up.
