Regarding Paul Benoit dit Livernois' land concession of 12 May 1659, Marcel Trudel in his book "Le Terrier Du Saint Laurent en 1663", page 416, has described it as follows: "Land of 2 arpents fronting on the river with a depth of 15 arpents.......... Its width stretches from rue Fullum to rue Parthenais; its depth ends south of rue Ontario on the hilltop at the corner of rues Nellida and Fullum" On April 27, 1670 Paul sold this land to his neighbor Pierre Picot de Belestre. At about this time he relocated across the river at Longueuil. The above land given to Paul was his second concession. His first land grant was three 1/2 arpent parcels given in July 1654. The original contracts for this land has been lost but they are referenced in "Les Origines De Montreal", Adj Menard Editeur, 1917, pages 271, 273 & 275. These three plot were as follows: Plot A had 192 feet frontage on rue Notre Dame with 96 feet depth along rue St Charles; plot B was on the south side of A and continued 96 feet along rue StCharles with a depth of 192 feet; plot C continued along rue StCharle to the corner of rue St. Paul, then extended 80 feet long it. Rue St. Charles is no longer in existence since in 1723 it was abandoned to develop the wide Place Jacques CArtier. Plot A above today approximates the Place de la Dauversiere. Plot B today approximates the location of the Hotel Nelson in Place Jacques Cartier. Beyond the Hotel to rue St. Paul approximates plot C. Thus with his initial land grants Paul Benoit was located in the center of Old Montreal. Fred Benoit Notify Administrator about this message?
