Noreen, Francois Benoit, the tenth child of Paul Benoit & Elisabeth Gobinet, was not married twice, although some records would seem to imply this. On January 29, 1701 Francois was the godfather at the baptism of Antoine Pascaud in Longueuil and Francoise Daigna was the godmother. Three weeks later on February 17, 1701 he again acted as godfather at the baptism Marie Josephe Goyau. She was the newborn daughter of Guillaume Goyau, Francois' former brother in law and his second wife Madeleine Goyau. Again it is of note that the godmother was Francoise Daigna, or Madeleine's younger sister. Apparently because of their close association there was some thoughts of marriage between Francois Benoit and Francoise Daigna because of May 28, 1701 the Notaire Antoine Adhemar penned an agreement between them concerning donation mutuelle and a promise of marriage. (Donation mutuelle was a legal term concerning the agreement between spouses which allowed them to leave each other heir to their property). On the same date of May 28th the Notaire Adhemar also wrote a contract for Francois engaging him to the explorer Antoine de Lamothe de Cadillac to go to Detroit and found that settlement. For whatever reason the couple had a serious disagreement for on May 31, 1701 the Notaire Adhemar did another document for Francois in which he rescinded his marriage agreement of three days before. Since the first two contracts were made the same day it suggests that it may have been his desire to be a voyageur that led to the annulment three days later. Francois must have left immediately after this since he was in Detroit with de Lamothe at the founding of that city on July 24, 1701. Francoise Daigna married Jacques Deniau on May 5, 1705 at Montreal and was listed as a single (i.e. unmarried) person. Thus because of the May 31st record of annulment it has been assumed there was a marriage, but the annulment was only of the May 28th promise of marriage. Concerning Francois' actual marriage to Angelique Chagnon the records are sparse. Burton, in his book "Cadillac's Village or Detroit Under Cadillac with a List of Property Owners and a History of the Settlement 1701 to 1710" states that Francois married Angelique Chagnon in Detroit in 1710. Although the Ste Anne church in Detroit was founded in 1701, the first surviving marriage record was not until 1710 when three marriages were celebrated but they did not concern Francois and Angelique. In addition there is no evidence that Angelique or the Chagnon family was in Detroit at that time. On February 7, 1711 the Notaire Jacques Bourdon of Montreal recorded a contract of marriage between Francois and Angelique. They probably married soon after this but there is no marriage record. The parents of Angelique were Francois Chagnon dit Larose and Catherine Charon and they were from Vercheres. There is no baptismal record for Angelique but at her death in 1773 she was listed as eighty six years old, suggesting a birthdate about 1687. She may have been born in Contrecoeur since her family was living there at that time. If these dates are correct she would have been about twenty four years old at the marriage Of their fifteen children ten have baptismal records while five do not. These five (Angelique, Marie Louise, Genevieve, Jean Baptiste and Pierre Antoine)were born between 1712 and 1717 and their birth order can be approximated from their marriage and death records.
