A biography/family history of John Andrew Benoit is included in "Montana, Its Story and Biography", Vol 3, pages 1144 & 1145. John was born 26 Apr 1844, son of Godfrey Benoit, a Canadian Frenchman, descendent of one of the pioneer French families of Quebec. Godfrey Benoit married Catherine Masse and they spent their lives as farmers. At age 17, John Benoit located to Springfield, MA, where he was employed as a clerk and learned silverplating. His first western experience was Winnipeg & failing to find public land there, he stopped at Bay St. Paul where he took up land and stayed for five years. Then he moved to Rolla, ND, where he was a merchant for about 15 years. In the spring of 1900, he moved Fairview, MT, community and was a rancher on public domain. John Benoit and family exercised their four homestead rights on the Dakota side of the state line, not far from Fairview, MT. Due to encroachment of settlers, at the end of five years John had to sell his stock and located to Ridgelawn where he opened a country store. Two years later he opened a country store at Ray, ND, and two years after that he moved to Mountain Home, ID, where he stayed 5 years as a merchant. He returned to the Fairview region and opened a country store, which he sold to his son, J.M. Benoit, in 1918. At Hartford, CT, John A. Benoit married Miss Alvina Lucas, born 9 Nov 1850 at Champlain, Province of Quebec, daughter of Philip and Annie (LaMotte) Lucas. Benoit children: Mary (Mrs. Alfred Collins, Lucky Strike, Alberta); Mrs. Charles Hardy (Fairview, MT); Minnie (Mrs. George Lamphere, Spokane, WA); Rose (Mrs. Arthur Northey (San Francisco); Aristide (Croteau, Alberta); Ada (Mrs. Martin Anton, Bismark, ND); Henry (Portland, OR); John M.
