Hello, Denis,

Thanks for the land title for Eugène Augustin Benoit at Oak Lake, Manitoba, Canada in Apr. 1894. He was killed in a tragic accident on his farm at age 49, leaving his wife, Odelie (Audelie) Gouin, with eleven children. Apparently the Priest in the village made her marry Jean Baptiste Lafevière - not really sure of the spelling of his name or anything about him - but apparently he was not kind to her and beat her. She died not long after Eugene, on June 5, 1900 at age 45 - of a "broken heart", it is said...

That left all eleven children orphans and they became scattered in Saskatchewan, Quebec, the USA and Alberta after that.

That left all eleven children orphans (5 daughters and 6 sons) and they became scattered in Saskatchewan, Quebec, the USA and Alberta after that:

Evariste Joseph (?, 1879-? 1954 or 55?), Antoinette (Mar. 21, 1881-May?, 1974), Eugenie (May 11, 1882-Jan. 10, 1944), Joseph Eugène (May 25, 1883-June 22, 1957), Ovila George (Feb. 15, 1884-Oct. 20, 1967), Emile (?, 1885-?, 1906), George (Filteau-Benoît) (Jan 25, 1887-Dec.? 1969?), Anita (Mar. 18, 1888-July 18, 1974), Maria (Mar. 13, 1892-Nov. 4, 1967 or 68?), Edmour (Aug. 2, 1893-?, 1991), Eva (Feb. 14, 1895-Oct. 11, 1929)

Evariste (aged 21), Joseph (aged 17) and Ovila (16)(my grandfather) went to New Hampshire, USA, for a while and then to Lafond, Alberta, to stay with an Aunt ("Auntie Lafond" - I think it was Odelie's sister, Ernestine Gouin Lafond, who was married to I think Leo or Leonard Lafond - son of Zotique and Adeline (Beaulac) Lafond of Baie-du-Fèbvre, Quebec) before going to the area of Leask (Marcelin), Saskatchewan, Canada, to take up homesteads of their own around the turn of the century.

Eugène's brother, Olderic Benoit, took Emile (15) and Maria (8) to live with him at his homestead in Kingsey Falls, Drummondville, Quebec. Emile died in 1906 at age 21 of tuberculosis.

My grandfather, Ovila, saw his brother, Georges Filteau, only three times after their parents died. The last time was at Ovila and Anna Blais-Blair's (my grandparents)50th wedding anniversary held in Leask, Saskatchewan in Dec. 1963. Georges (age 13 when orphaned) had been adopted by the Filteau family in Dumas, Saskatchewan. It was amazing to see the two of them together - they looked alike, made the same kind of gestures when talking... almost like twins.

Odelie's brother, Evariste Gouin, who owned a large farm in St-Félix de Kinsey, Québec, went to Oak Lake to bring some of the children back to Quebec with him to live with him. I am not sure how many or which children he took with him.

If anyone knows any further details about this family, would really appreciate it. I also speak French, if that is useful...

Happy New Year!
