William (Willie) Benoit married Laura Houle on 08 May 1906 in Ludlow, MA. Father Desrochers presided at the wedding. William was born in Springfield, MA about 1883, the son of Joseph Benoit and Mary Day of New York. His wife Laura was born 18 March 1887, daughter of Améédéée Houle and Rose-Anna Doucet,baptized Maria-Emma Laura Houle on 20 March 1887 at Ste. Eulalie parish, Nicolet, QC. Her god parents were Philippe Aubry, an uncle, and his wife Adèèle Doucet. The marriage register indicates that both of them lived in Ludlow, MA at the time and worked in the local mills. Laura was 19, a mill operative, and William was 21, a weaver. (Mass State Archives, Marriage register, town of Ludlow, MA, vol 563, pg 138)
William signed his name on several church records... he used “Willie,” “Willy,” and “Welly”
Found living in Springfield, MA in the 1910 US Census, with oldest child, Freddy.
Found living in Lawrence, MA in the 1920 census with 5 children: Freddie, Irene, Edward, Rita, Edna.
It is believed that they had a 6th child, Gladys, born abt. 1923, who was taken to live with an uncle (Laura’s brother) in Pontiac, MI. Before her death, my mother recalled alcoholism problems with one of the parents. As a result, she said, they were not allowed to visit with their aunt, uncle or cousins living in the same city. Consequently, they lost touch. Family tradition is that Freddy ran away with the circus.
Looking for:
(1) Date of birth for William
(2) Date / place of death for both Willie and Laura
(3) Any information on children. Did find a Gladys Benoit in Social Security Death Index which is a possibility... and baptismal records in Quebec for 3 older children: Freddy, Irene, and Edward. Nothing else known on the remaining children
ANY clues, leads, etc. would be appreciated. Laura was my grandfather’’s sister. If you are a descendant of this couple, I will be happy to share what information I have on Laura’s siblings.
