Hi Louise: I read your posting with interest as I've been researching my Benoit heritage, beginning in Lachine, QC with my mom, daughter of Emile Benoit, son of Arthur Benoit, son of Salime Benoit, son of ??? well that's where I'm at.
However in the 1871 Canadian Census micofilm I found a Marguerite Benoit, age 80 meaning she was born in 1781, living with Joseph Benoit, that I believe is the father of Salime, in St-Alexandre, QC.
Would this be the same Marguerite Benoit you mention in your posting?
Love to hear more about this woman - she might be my ancestor!! Thanks in advance, Barbara
