Dear David Many thanks for the prompt reply to my message.
The date of christening of 31.5.1686 for James Charles comes from the IGI so may well be a year out! His age in the 1881 census is 13 implying a birth date of 1867/8.
My ancestor was plain John Bennison (I abbreviated his name to save typing). He was a collier and lived in Hot Lane, Stoke from at least 1841 until his death sometime between 1861 and 1871. His grandson Samuel moved to the Duke of Bridgewater's Lancashire coal field about 1895.
I would be interested in any information of your side of the family to add to my database. If you have Excel I can e-mail you a copy of this (plus an explanation) if you wish. It shows possible links of your James Charles back to a Samuel and Ann in the Norton area by 1791.
