For Helen Mayoh: Thank you very much for your very helpful response to my earlier post. First, concering your ancestor John B. Bennison. Was he the John Bennison who was a surveyor who produced a noted map of Staffordshire? I have looked again at the facsimile poster in my poseesion, and now think that the Mr. Bennison whose name is printed in the largest typeface on the poster is the auctioneer or agent rather than the owner of the property. This activity would fit well with the profession of surveyor, and the date (1843) fits well enough. Your information on the family of James Charles Bennison fits almost exactly with my oral family history. Both the profession and the names of hs parents and siblings are an exact match. However, family records (which do not include a birth certificate but which do include his tombstone) give his date of birth as 24th June 1869. Was he the oldest member of the family? Victorian families sometimes 'adjusted' the birth dates of elder children, for the obvious reasons. If you are interested, I can provide information on all James Charles' descendants. His daughter(my aunt)Ruth, born 1918, is still alive, and still in posession of the family bible. When I visit her next month, I will have another look at it. I believe that it still contains a sheet of paper with the names of Alfred's siblings and antecedents. If memory serves, this list goes back to the 1890s, so it may be of some use to you.
