Carolyn, This is the first time I have accessed the Bennight web page. I've been reading through some of the messages and yours posted in Aug 01 got my attention. I think I read in earlier messages that your husband is Marvin Bennight. Is that correct? I graduated from Navajo High School near Friendship, OK and a Marvin Bennight and some of his brothers and sisters also went to school at Navajo - Gladys and Beverly. My maiden name was Daina Biddy. The Bennight's of the Navajo community are my distant cousins. I have started researching my family tree on both sides of my family. I have some information on the Bennights of Navajo. The information comes from the book, " Across the Lonley Years, the Story of Jackson County, OK." The part about the Bennights is told by my great aunt, Dollie Harris. Eldridge Bennight was her grandfather. She states that "Mr and Mrs Eldridge Bennight came to the Navajoe community in 1888. They built a half dug-out and began farming operations. A year later Mr. Robert J. Briscoe and his family joined them. Mrs. Emma Briscoe, before her marriage was Miss Emma Bennight, the daughter of Eldridge." (Robert and Emma Bennight Briscoe were my great-grandparents. Dollie Briscoe Harris was their daughter and my great aunt.)"Mr and Mrs Bennight are buried in the Navajoe cemetery." I have a Jackson Co Cemetary Record book. It lists the following Bennights in the Navagoe Cemetery: Joseph E. Bennight - 19 Feb 1839 to 5 Feb 1914. Susan F. Bennight - 12 Jan 1830 to 12 Nov 1910. Wesley C. Bennight - 8 Nov 1860 to 16 July 1942. Joseph L. Bennight - 6 Jan 1890 to 12 Nov 1930 William H. Bennight - 5 Aug 1891 to 28 Apr 1966 Lealer Bennight - 19 Sep 1892 to ? Mar 1968 Judy Elizabeth Bennight - 10 Nov 1945 to 24 Jun 1970 Michial Louis Bennight - 15 Jun 1953 to 27 Jan 1970 The book on the history of Jackson Co. states that "the children of Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge Bennight were Emma and Wesley. Brothers of Eldridge were Lum and John, who had the first general store in Navajoe. They sold everything from needles to plows." I belive there is a historial marker stating something about the Bennights in the Navajoe Cemetery. It's been some time since I visited there. I have a picture that I've scanned from the book of "Grandpa and Grandma Eldridge Bennight and Wes or Les (It states both names and is confusing) and his wife and children made in 1901 near Navajoe." I'll try to send you a scanned copy if you want. I believe I have seen the original in the Old Greer County Museum at Mangum OK. Concerning the Indian connection, my mother (great granddaughter of E. Bennight) always told me that Grandma Bennight was part Cherokee. Notify Administrator about this message?
