Howard G. Bennet was born, 23 Feb 1875, the fourth of five children of Galen and Elizabeth (Conkling) Bennet, both born 1837, natives of Port Jervis, NY. Galen Bennet was a prominent businessman at Port Jervis, owning a flour mill, a saw mill, and a marble and granite business.Galen died in 1912, and Elizabeth died in 1919.Elizabeth Conkling was the daughter of Dr. John Conkling, of New York State, who in 1818 made a prospecting tour through the Great West and acquired extensive real estate investments in Chicago and St. Louis.
Howard G. Bennet was educated in the public schools of Port Jervis and graduated from the University of New York in 1896.He was admitted to the New York bar the same year.He practiced in his native town until 1901. That year he moved to Great Falls, MT, and was connected with the Boston & Montana Smelter about four years. During 1905-1906, he was appointed deputy county assessor of Cascade County.Then he took up general law practice, being a member of Berry & Bennet of the City of Great Falls, for two years.In Nov 1918, he was elected county attorney.
On 22 Nov 1905, Howard Bennet married Miss Bessie Balstad, a native of Norway.Child: Elizabeth
