Sorry I didn't get back to you. My 2great-grandfather was James L. Bennet. They evidently came from Arkansas into Texas with the Texas Cherokees. Probably originated in Tennesse or North Carolina. I have no proof as yet about the Cherokee membership, but there are Bennets on the Dawes Rolls. Some of these people came to Texas during the war with Mexico, or right afterward. I'm fairly sure my Great-grandmother was at least a quarter Cherokee.
