On behalf of Mae Benne, great granddaughter of Hermann Benne, I hereby post the following correction: I am a great granddaughter of Hermann and Maria Catherine Benne; I grew up on a farm 1/4 mile from the Hermann Benne Homestead. The cemetery referred to in your message in GenForm was about four miles from my home. (I now live in Seattle). Maria was certainly NOT a Lutheran. I suspect she was turning over in her grave at such a thought! Until the last few years, I was in possession of Maria's prayer book which was inscribed with her birth year, 1821, and date of presentation, 1827. Before I moved to a retirement community, I passed on the family treasures in my possession. The prayer book went to great, great, great grandson who was raised in the Faith. I will verify the following information with a cousin, also a great granddaughter of the current name of the Catholic Church to which her husband is a member. Several years ago, it was mentioned in the Church's archives that the Benne family walked overland 15-17 miles to the nearest Catholic church --with a priest in attendance--to Easter Sunday Mass. Maria died in the winter, when the nearest priest was over 35 miles away; therefore she did not receive the last rites. Consequently, she could not at that time be buried in consecrated ground. Her grave, and later that of Hermann's, reside in a corner of the church land, under cedar trees where nothing grows. For a number of years my brother and I placed a living plant on their graves during the Memorial day weekend. A grandson, the late Ernest Benne, had a gravestone erected with the years of their birth and death. Should I be in error about the "walk to Hanover Kansas" for Easter Services, I will be happy to correct this. My grandfather was John Bernard Benne, their youngest son, and the stories about Maria that came down through him was that Maria was very devout, and that she would not allow anything but High German to be spoken in her home. A German professor once told me that Germans from Hanover were very proud of their language. Notify Administrator about this message?
