John Winthrop

I read in the Forum that John Benjamin was a good friend of John Winthrop...perhaps even a classmate...and that their families lived near one another. However, I believe that Winthrop lived in Groton, while Benjamin came from Sussex. I have not found either a primary or a scholarly source that supports or disputes the claims about a friendship and/or shared schooling. Could someone help me locate documentation that would clarify the relationship between Winthrop and Benjamin?

I read earlier today (in a book on the history of Dedham, MA) that the title of "Mr." was typically used to address only college graduates. I had previously read that the title "Mr." suggested social standing, but I had not seen anything prior to today about the title's educational connotations. I know for a fact that Winthrop referred to John Benjamin as "Mr." (in Winthrop's Journal), but I have never seen an historical (or a contemporary) source that documents J. Benjamin's educational background. Clearly, the man was literate. He married a minister's daughter; he possessed many books. However, knowing that Benjamin was a literate Puritan does not necessarily mean that he went to school with Winthrop. I would really love to know where to locate the facts about where, when, and with whom Benjamin went to school (or college). I believe that Cambridge University was mentioned in what I read on the Forum, and I believe that Winthrop did attend Emmanuel College, Cambridge. But...what about Benjamin? Any help would be much appreciated.
