John I can tell you the 1066 history as it relates to my name and the name my name was derived from. The man that came with William the Conqueror was named Ogerus son of Unimar of Viking blood from Normandy. He was recruited by Mallet of the village of Eye who was the cousin of King Harolds wife. Ogerus was one of four knights recruited by Sir Mallet of eye. Ogerus fought bravely at the battle of hastings and was awarded a piece of land that was formerly owned by four freemen according to the dommsday book. The piece of land was became know as the bydenafelda which later translated to Bedingfield which is the name Benefield was derived from and may be the name that Benfield came from. My ancestor arrived in this country in the early 1600s and settled in Brunswick County VA and then part of that family migrated to NC and some time in the late 1700s or early 1800s many names were derived from the Bedingfiled name such as Benefield,Bennefield,Bennyfield, and I assume Benfield as well as several others.I will send info on Ogerus then you can do the reseach to see if it fits.
