dorothy my great great grandfather was/is David Benfer b 9/22/1833-d 8/25/1912 late of marysville perry county pa.(buried @Chestnut grove cemetary)according to his obituary in the Perry County Times (on 8/29/1912) he mustered into service at harrisburg 10/10/1862 served with 51stPa volunteers co K (PVT) taken sick with rheumatism in knoxville tenn 11/1864 remained with unit until discharged 1/12/1865 member of Lieutenants David Gelb post #188 Grand Army of the Republic Marysville PA. his wife was Matilda (ne Dreese) He had four sons James W Henry Abraham(my great grandfather) David F and Arthur E. I am very interested in any info you or anyone else might find about him and the difference if any between him and Daniel Benfer. David is the great grandson of Johan George Benfer(b3/21/1745-d4/23/1818)(served pvt Northumberland militia and rangers under Lt James McElvy &Capt James Boevard) and Mary Catherine Scharff, grandson of George Benfer/Margret (ne Malick) (George: b 9/29/1777-d11/10/1854)(77th reg Pa militia 11/10/1814)and son of Henry Benfer/Elizabeth(ne Gross)(Henry: b8/5/1804-d 6/4/1887)David's brother was George W Benfer of McClure b2/17/1840d4/14/1922 who served in the 49th Pa Volunteers Co's:H,A Mustered in 8/15/1861 Pvt promoted 1/1/1865 to Sgt mustered out @ Halls Hill VA 7/15/1865 he was very active in the GAR in McClure. hope this helps
