THE BENEPE/PUEMPIN LINE
With deepest thanks to Elisabeth Feuz - she has sent the eagerly-awaited information on Dr. Benepe's ancestors. As you will recall, she is descended from his father's brother.
It seems that Harriet Warfield was Dr. Benepe's second wife; he had been married in 1794 to Esther Muller (umlaut over the u) in Gelterkinden, Switzerland. It is assumed that she died before Dr. Benepe arrived in America (remember my story about an epidemic?).

She has explained that many ships departing from Europe stopped in England and it is possible that Dr. Benepe's first wife died there or on board the ship. I grew up on tales of a raging epidemic (my grandmother's words; she had a flair for the dramatic) on land and the ship was isolated. It was either cholera or typhoid, and Dr. Benepe escaped from the ship and swam ashore but I was told that was in Baltimore.
