Hello my friends im a decendent of Colonel John Benefiel
John Benningfield came from England
and found refuge in Maryland , John Benefiel, his grandson, son of Robert, was born in 1760or61 in New Jersey and married in 1783 to Rebecca Fitzjames from Scotland.
After the Revolutionary War, John Benefiel relocated to Hamilton Co. , and it is reported he resided in the Old Fort at Cincinnati(im guessing FORT WASHINGTON),and he assisted in the surveying of the City of Cincinnati.
At some period he received the title of "COLONEL" This may have been during
the Indian uprisings of the period about
1785-1800.
It is said he was in the War of 1812 and the he was Colonel of the Regiment of Light Horse
Dragoons at Carlisle(if anyone is wondering where carlisle is its near Sullivan,IN)
when the Indians were still there.
John Benefiel was one of the signers of the Indiana Constitution in 1816 when Indiana became a state, and a member of the Legislature in 1820.
