Seeking info on Mary Benedict of Norwalk, Ct.

I am trying to prove an adoption of Nathan Benedict to St. John. Mary was b. 1699 and daughter of Thomas Benedict and Rachel (Smith)Benedict of Norwalk.

The adoption would have come from one of Mary's siblings, the story goes that Nathan was adopted by Daniel and Mary (Benedict) St. John and he assumed the surname. I am a St. John but my DNA does not match with my lineage and we are trying to find the disruption.
