My BENCZE relatives are from the area of Croatia near Legrad (by the Drave River). The area was formerly Hungary. Does anyone have any connection to this family or know any of the history of this local area? My g-g-grandfather STJEPAN BENCZE (b. 1857 and d. 1939 in Hungary) married MAGDALENA BEDENICES (b. 1860 and d. 1957 in Hungary). They had four children. All remained in the Legrad area except my g-grandmother ILONA BENCZE UJLAKY (b. May 6, 1885 d. Sept 15, 1981). ILONA married FERENCS UJLAKY (b. March 13, 1879 in Hungary; d. April 22, 1939 in Staten Island, NY) and emigrated to Staten Island, NY. Her sisters and brother were ADAM BENCZE (b. 1888), LOUISA BENCZE VIDAKOVIC, and KATARINA BENCZE SIMON.
I have many more descendants names which I can provide if you find a link to this family. ILONA's daughter and grandson have recently been in contact with some of their cousins in Legrad. I am interested in any information about the history of the area of Legrad and also the BENCZE, BEDENICES and UJLAKY families.
