BENCH Thomas 1800s emig from England

I am trying to find out about my Great Grandfather Thomas Bench who emigrated from England in the 1800s. He was an engineer and according to family stories he was intending to work on the railroads. He had a son Frederick who was born in Canada in 1862. Frederick returned to Ireland and married a Irish girl then came to London where he settled. After he had had several children he returned to America about 1910 telling his family he was going to find his American family and then would send for them when he had. He never contacted them again.
I would be grateful for any information.
