Af-Amer Benbows from Clarendon County, SC

My name is Joshua Walker and I am a part of the 3rd generation of a group of Benbows from Manning, SC. More specifically, my grandmother and her 13 siblings grew up on land South of the Jordan area along what is today Hwy 260. The land is very neat to lots of water (I believe called Wyboo Swamp according to google). Most of her generation left SC for New York and DC in the 40s and 50s, but many remain in Clarendon County. We are of African-American descent, but are trying to find Black relatives and even links to our White slave past. The Patriarch of the family that we observe is my grandmother's (still alive, 82) father Wilson Quincy Benbow, a prominent local Black minister and farmer who passed away in the early 40s. According to my grandmother he would have been in his 50s. The Matriarch is Catherine Wright Benbow who passed in 1981 at an age of about 95 (no official records of her birth, but this is the closest estimate of her age based on stories and links from other people). Cathering was originally a Wright. Two of the 14 children are still alive.
We recently had a family reunion in Baltimore (July 2007) and in Charleston, SC (July 2005). As one of the many dozens of young people in the family, I am really interested connecting with our long lost relatives and even descendants of the slave owners. If you think you may have a link to our family, please email me at joshua.walker@att.net. While I know a lot of family names, I can easily call my mother, cousins, or grandmother to try and verify any link you may think exists.

Again: African-American Benbows, Jordan Area, Wilson Quincy Benbow, Catherine Wright Benbow
