Harry, I guess I'll take the time to respond to your defensive posting. You wrote, YOU: I as an indivudual made no "all-encompassing conclusion". ME: In your original post you wrote "Please be advised that the surname Benavides is a Sephardic (Jewish) name." Well, my friend, that sounds like a conclusion to me. But, I'll let other readers come to their OWN conclusion on my interpretation. YOU: I have have not been mislead nor have I interpreted incorrectly the statements made in Sephardim.com. You see, I am the web master of that site, which makes me suspicious on how much time you devoted to your research of the site. Less than an hour I bet, because my post was brand new. ME: In that case, I wonder if the subject matter should be more carefully presented to prevent miscommunication between your information and the reader. (I won't respond to the personal cheap-shot you took at my research methods or ability.) You assume that I have never visited sephardim.com before your posting. YOU: Let me put to bed the comments you made. My statement,"Not all individuals bearing these names may be Sephardim or of Sephardic origin...." is meant to convey the fact that it is completely possible that individuals of non-Jewish origin may have independently assumed the same name. ME: It is also "completely possible" that the Jewish people purged during the inquisition assumed the name Benavides to conceal, for survival, their religious beliefs. You can see the same thing happen throughout history. Especially in the Western Hemisphere where native Americans became Christians in public but kept their native religions intact secretively for many generations. YOU: Check with your priest! No one on my site including the webmaster will attempt to change one's religious convictions. ME: Here again, another CONCLUSION. What, I ask you, in my posting suggests that I have a Priest or that I am associated with any faith at all? In this oversensitive world, we could call that "stereotyping." And, I never accused sephardim.com of trying to change anyone's religious convictions. At least I don't think so. But let me go read my posting again. Again, thanks for the response and for the welcome to use your site for research.
