My paternal great grandfather was Felipe Benavidez from New Mexico who married a Patricia Sandoval (her father was Patricio Sandoval). They had at least two sons, one, my grandfather, Joseph Cruz Benavidez b. 1893 d. 1984 and another son, Moses Benavidez who was killed in France during WWI. Moses is buried at a cemetery there.
Rumor has it that Felipe Benavidez was raised by Kit Carson or possibly Kit Carson, Jr. My grandfather, Joseph moved to Walsenburg, CO and married a Mary Frances Gonzales b. 1903. They had 6 children,
Celina, Herman, Phillip, Virginia, Betty, Rosalie.
