Louise, I ran across your posting in the process of searching for info about the family of my g/g uncle William G. Hall who lived in Iowa and Beloit, WI.He had some connections with the Proutys and Bemises in IA and WI, as indicated below.
Will Hall appears in the 1910 Beloit, WIU.S. census along with his wife Hattie (age 42), their daughter Wava (age 14) and Hattie's widowed aunt Lucy A. Prouty (age 79).I also found Lucy and J. W. (James) Prouty and a Hattie (age 13) identified as their stepdaughter in the 1880 Beloit census. It's possible that these Hatties are the same person (the ages match up) and that the 1880 stepdaughter designation is incorrect.
A further mystery that I haven't resolved is that Will's first wife (Minnie) and their other daughter (Wava) are in the 1900 census for Aplington, IA, without him, and I haven't located him close to that area or in Beloit. Also, I found Wava Hall Buck in the California death index with that notation that her mother's maiden name was Bemis. Further, old family notes compiled many years ago by my mother indicate that Will's two wives (Minnie and Hattie) were sisters!
Regarding the Bemis's, I have an old photo (from my mother's collection) identified by her as being Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bemis, and another photo the same lady identifed as being Amanda Bemis.I think they are Minnie and Hattie's parents.
Genealogy.com says that a Charles F. Bemis and a James W. Prouty are in the 1900 Iowa U.S. census, but I haven't pinpointed their location.
Does any of this come as a surprise to you and/or can you shed any light on some of the clues and inconsistencies?
