Greetings fellow Belton family members...
My name is Carmen Schneider (I have my dad's last name), a 20 year old student at FSU. I am the daughter of Constance Belton, who is the daughter of Cortlandt Sevelle Belton Jr., who is the son of Cortlandt Sevelle Belton Sr., who was the son of David Anderson Belton.
My great-great-grandfather, David Anderson Belton, was born in Camden, SC. He was educated somewhere in North Carolina. We think that David's father was a slave, and we don't know his name. David's dad had about 15 children in South Carolina- one being Henry Belton. We also know that one of David's sisters lived in Buffalo, NY. David A. Belton came to Palatka, FL in the early 1900's because his brother Henry was here. My family of Beltons still resides here in Palatka, Florida.
My great-great-grandfather, David Anderson Belton had 3 sons. His first, Alphonso David Belton was a medical doctor in Beckley, West Virginia. His second son, Cortlandt Sevelle Belton Sr., had a famous jazz orchestra (Florida Society Syncopators) in the 1920's and 30's, performing nationally. His last child, Wilbert Chester Belton, played piano in his brother Cortlandt's band.
I've been asking my mom for FOREVER to try and put some of our family history together, and we decided to start this Christmas. She told me about the beltonfamily.com website, and once I saw it- I was amazed. She told me that this was our family, and we sat down and wrote down names as far back as we could go with the help of my grandfather.
There are Beltons here from Palatka who participate in the Belton family reunion. My mom thinks her name is Lila Belton, but we don't know.
Can someone please write me back or email me? I would love to talk with someone more about this. I don't know much, but I'm learning- and I'm very eager to connect with my family.
