My husband's grandmother was Loretta Valdora Bellinger, daughter of Jacob and Jennie Eckert of Tawas City. Jennie died when Etta was 12. Etta understood that the Bellingers were from Canada, and on the census I have seen she listed her parents as 'Canadian-English.'
How came it that the Eckert girls married Bellingers in Canada? Did any of the Bellingers travel from NY to Canada to MI?
After Jennie died, Etta lived a year at the Whitefish Pointe lighthouse.THe lightkeeper wintered in Port Huron and took her with them over the summer. Etta married Gustave Bekofske, a immigrant from Prussia. He was a brickmaker and later they bought a farm in Lapeer Co. At that time their son Herman was 13 and stayed in Flint with his uncle James Bellinger to finish school in the city. Gus died of TB when Herman was 15. Herman is my husband's father and lived still in Grand Blanc MI with his wife Laura Grace (nee o'Dell). They have three boys, a lawyer, a Phd, and a minister. I got the minister.
I am so glad to have found this thread.
