Geoff Martin who is on this list on occasion, who in my opinion is the expert on this topic, would probably have a better answer but I will give it a shot.
In short, yes.
It appears by the limited written history, that the Bellew's, first appeared in written history at Normandy as part of the Norman Invasion of England. In particular, I have seen in one book that one actually participated as a "Marshall" in William the Conqueror's army. They then settled in Yorkshire and then Devon England (BTW: There are several Bellew families still in these areas). They then went onto Ireland as part of the 1169 invasion of Ireland and settled in several areas, but most prominently in County Meath and Louth (Again, there are still some Bellew's in these areas). It also appears that several members of the clan became lower/middle nobility as Baron's, Lords and civil Sheriff's in first England and later Ireland. I speculate this was as a reward for their initial support of William the Conqueror. In my case one branch apparently moved back to Devon, England circa 1640 or so and then again back to Ireland at a later point I have yet to determine.
