Dear "cousin" Joyce,

Is not searching for one's ancestors, for one's origins, also a bit of a metaphor for the quest for some lost or forgotten part of oneself, a search for one's inner child maybe, for one's acorn? I for one have reached that age (53) where the need to repatriate some scattered or neglected part of myself is deeply felt.

I was born in Limoges (Ontario), but have been living in Québec for over 25 years. I live in Sherbrooke (a two hour drive from Rigaud, where Véronique and Léon were married).

I finally reached cousin Marcel on the telephone. He's the family genealogist I told you about. He has mountains of documents that reach in all directions. What he could tell me on the phone was brief, which is understandable. We hope to meet later this summer. Here's what for now.

Véronique was indeed married to Léon Bertrand on January 18, 1836, in Rigaud. Present at the ceremony were Pierre and Joseph Bertrand, brothers of the groom. Also present was André Poiriault, brother of Véronique.

Véronique was the daughter of Ignace Poiriault and Marguerite Rocbrune (?) -- you mention a Marguerite Couillaud dit Larocque. To be clarified.

Ignace Poiriault (Véronique's father) was the son of Ignace, and Angélique Poisson dit Idelfeurt.

Ignace (Véronique's grandfather) was the son of Jacques Poiriot (notice the change in spelling).

Jacques Poiriot (Véronique's great-grandfather) was born June 8, 1720, in Ville-Marie (now Montréal), and died in Lachine (now a suburb of Montréal), in 1793, at age 77. (Oops! As cousin Marcel points out, the figures do not add up; Jacques either died in 1793 at age 73, or in 1797 at age 77.) Jacques was married to Françoise Parant (also spelled Parent). He was the son of Paul Poiriot.

Paul Poiriot came to New-France from Paris (parish of St-Médard), in 1701 as a soldier with the Régiment de Tonty. He was married to Françoise Jousset on April 3, 1714, in Notre-Dame church, in Ville-Marie (Montréal).

Paul Poiriot's father, also called Paul, was married to Marie-Jeanne... And this is where the story ends... or begins. My brother Louis was in Paris at the church of St-Médard. Unfortunately, all archives were destroyed with the Revolution of 1789.

Cousin Marcel tells me he has detailed anecdotes and old photographs. I may be able to provide you with more later.

I hope these bits of information help you along for now.

Final comment for today: For some obscure reason unknown to me, the name Poiriot (Poiriau, Poiriault) has entirely disappeared, is nowhere to be found in any phone book. At some moment in time, probably in the 20th century, everyone dropped it and kept de Bellefeuille (literally: of the beautiful leaf -- Belle=beautiful Feuille=leaf).

Wish you well. Salutations to your maman.

If you could send me your postal address, I could send you photographs.
