Ed, I'm not sure if you're still around the forum -- it's nearly six years after you posted this! But I was wondering if you ever found out more information about your Fred Rice Belknap?? I just recently came across the information that my ggg-grandparents names were Frederick and Sylvia Rice. They originated in Ohio (at least their oldest daughter, Sylvia was born there) but they raised most of their family in the Greenville/Grand Rapids, Mich. area. (I don't know Michigan, so I'm not sure if that's close to Benton Harbor or not, but it's very possible some of their children settled in various areas of that state.) In Sylvia A. Rice's obituary (the elder Rice's daughter) it states that her sister is "Mrs. Senator J.W. Belknap. I'm thinking that Senator and Mrs. Belknap could have followed a very old tradition and named their son Frederick Rice Belknap, after J.W.'s wife's family names. Do you know how old Fred was when he died in 1932? Sylvia Rice (daughter of Frederick and Sylvia) was born in 1840, but died in 1886 at the age of just 46, leaving behind her husband George N. Phelps and 8 children. She died at the home of her sister, the Belknaps. If you believe we have a connection, please reply to me with any information you might have on the Rice family. I believe your Fred may be a first cousin to my gg-grandfather, George Frederick Rice, born in 1855, and raised in Greenville. Thanks much!! Notify Administrator about this message?
