One of my English cousins has researched Sir Robert Belknap(pe) for years. We are all related to this man who lived in 14th century England. For those of you who wish to read about him a little more fully, take a look at the earlier postings on this page and under BELTOFT. I quote as follows:-
"Now in the United States the belknaps are alive and kicking, but despite efforts by genealogists including Bernau, a connection between Sir Robert and the American Belknaps has not been found. In 1635 a certain Abraham Belknap from Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, emigrated to America. He settled in Lynn, Massachusetts with his wife mary nee Stallion. They had 12 children nearly all boys, and I believe that most of the America Belknaps are descended from these children."

This seems to me to be the most likely progenitor and is very early in Colonial history.
