Hi Alison
I have got Archibald Maxwell Borland on my family tree. He was born about 1838 in Ayrshire the son of John Borland and Mary Maxwell. His mother, Mary, was the sister of Robert Maxwell – who is my direct ancestor. Mary and Robert Maxwell ‘s parents were Quintin Maxwell and Jean Hunter.

Archibald Maxwell Borland married Mary McGeachie on 22nd September at Allison Street, Newton, Ayr – Mary’s parents were Peter McGeachie and Ann Boyd.

Archibald Maxwell Borland and Mary had children John (Greenock 1865) Annie (Ayr 1867) Jane (Ayr 1868) and Mary Maxwell (Ayr 1871).

A gravestone in Newton Green Burial Ground reads :-

Erected by Archibald Maxwell Borland in memory of his beloved wife Mary Weir McGeachie who died 6 Feb 1874 aged 35; and of their children Annie died Aug 1879 aged 3½ , Mary died 27 Sept. 1873 aged 3½; Jeanie died 29 Sept. 1873 aged 4½; Mary and Jeanie are buried at Gorosal, British Honduras {now Belize}

I think that Archibald Maxwell Borland and Mary Scott Menzies must have married outside Scotland – as there is no marriage certificate on Scotlandspeople.

I hope this information is of help to you – and I would love to know more about why Archibald Maxwell Borland and Mary McGeachie were in Belize in 1873 – mind you Archibald Maxwell Borland was an engineer so he may have been working on a project. I would also like to know if his son John survived as he is not listed on the Newton Green gravestone and anything about his 2nd wife Mary Scott Menzies.

Hoping to hear from you soon
