Hi Alice,I'm not sure if there is a connection. My Mercier line came from Thormebais St Trond Brabant Belgium. They came to the USA in 1856-1859...a much earlier time frame than Charles and Ernest.Do you know what town they came from? Do you have their naturalization papers? If not they should be easy to track down since they came in 1892 a time frame in which records kept much better.Do you know where Charles and Ernest settled in the US?My guess would be that they came to NY and stayed or came or WI, MI or IN...where there were Belgian communities. If you can find the name of the town they came from, the Belgian's kept very excellent civil registrations...I have a lot of copies of my Mercier line from Thormebais St Trond...If I can be of further help...please feel free to drop me a line.
