Hi Jenna Unfortunately I do not know where Jacob came from. I have been unable to trace his immigration papers. There is no record of his marriage. Also, it was not a requirement to record the place of birth on the death certificate at the time he died. I realise this is like looking for a needle in a haystack but I'm hoping that through some miracle I might get a lead. It is only on the son Joseph's birth certificate where the surname is recorded as "Eggremont". On all future documentation the family is recorded as "Acraman". I know there were people named Acraman living in Adelaide at this time but I have been unable to find a connection with these families. I suspect that the Eggremont name was anglicised to Acraman. Here is a summary of what I do know in case one day someone reads it and is able to add to it - Jacob's wife was Maria Woodroofe. Maria was born in Wicklow, Ireland on 16 April, 1837 and baptised Church of Ireland. She arrived in Adelaide on 8th April 1855 as an assisted immigrant aboard the “Northern Light”. Maria died on 12 June 1925 having outlived her husband Jacob who died on 23 November 1891. Maria was a licensed foster mother. Jacob and Maria must have married sometime between April 1855 and November 1857 but their marriage was not recorded in the civil registration system. Jacob and Maria registered the birth of their son "Joseph Eggremont" (father was noted as Jacob Eggremont) on 4 November 1857. Their son Joseph was baptised on 15 November 1857 as a Roman Catholic under the name "Joseph Acraman" (father noted as Jacob Acraman) Joseph's sponsors were an Irish couple - Patrick and Mary Finnissey. This couple later became known as Patrick and Mary Fennescey - parents of John Fennescey (Fennescey House) whose bio appears in the Australian Dictionary of Biography - http://www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/AS10159b.htm Jacob and Maria lived in Peter Street, Rosewater, Port Adelaide for a considerable period of time. In 1877 their son Joseph purchased the property in which they lived. They lived at this address until their deaths. On Jacob's death certificate he was described as a "labourer". On Maria's death certificate, Jacob was described as a "dredge hand". Regards Karen Notify Administrator about this message?
