My brain must have been out to lunch...
1) Mary Jane CALLAHAN was the wife of John Larkin BELEW, not Silas BELEW. Silas's wife, Mary, was Mary Bell COLLINS.
2) If Harmon STROUP had an affair with Silas BELLEW's wife, it would have to have been with Silas's first wife, Olive McKEE, so wouldn't have affected John Larkin, our test subject's paternal grandfather. Harmon STROUP died before the 1870 census, so he could not have been the father of John Larkin BELEW, born in 1873. [There were other STROUPs around, so an NPE in this generation is not impossible, just that the liaison I suggested in my prior message is impossible.]
The above corrections increase the odds that Silas was an adopted STROUP orphan or that some other, entirely different and as yet unknown, NPE occurred.
