DNA testing has revealed that a descendant of Silas BELEW (1823/4-1900) of Jefferson Co., MO, is genetically a STROUP, meaning he has an NPE (a "non-paternal event," i.e., a hidden adoption, illicit paternity, or deliberate name change) in his patrilineal line. Anyone descended from Silas BELEW is potentially affected by this NPE. On paper, the test subject descends on this line: Solomon BELEW & W1: Tabitha COOK _Silas BELEW & W2: Mary Bell COLLINS __John Larkin BELEW & Mary Jane CALLAHAN ___Pvt ____Pvt In the 1850 census of Jefferson County, Silas BELEW is listed next to Harmon STROUP, who is believed to be an orphan of Andrew STROUP, descendant of Johann Pieter STRAUB, the 1733 immigrant to Philadelphia. This BELEW descendant matches the descendants of Johann Pieter at a very high level, namely, 67/67, so the match is unequivocal. As Solomon was born in TN and the Jefferson Co., MO, STROUPs are from NC, it appears unlikely that Solomon was the bearer of the NPE. It seems most likely that either Silas was an orphan of Andrew STROUP, adopted by Solomon BELEW, or that Harmon STROUP had an affair with Silas's wife, Mary Jane CALLAHAN. However, there are other possible scenarios, for example, there is an outside chance that Solomon bore the NPE, provided his ancestors crossed paths with these STRAUB/STROUPs early on -- in NC, MD, or PA, before coming to TN. Testing a patrilineal descendant of Solomon, one who does not descend from Silas, will answer that question. What I have on the genealogy of this BELEW family is online at my web site in the form of linked family group sheets, which you can hook into from Solomon's page: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/FGS/B/BelewSolomon-TabithaCook-EllenderRobertson.shtml It is critical that other male BELEWs descended on a patrilineal line from other sons of Silas BELEW be DNA tested to uncover whether or not they, too, are affected by this NPE. For information about the STRAUB/STROUP project, in general, please see this page: http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Straub/StraubDNA.shtml For information about this STRAUB/STROUP family, in particular, please see this page (and scroll to the right to see the lineages): http://dgmweb.net/genealogy/DNA/Straub/StraubDNA-results-HgI1a.shtml#AS5 I'll be happy to answer any questions you might have. My role here is as administrator of the STRAUB project, but I am also a descendant of Johann Pieter STRAUB, so these BELEWs are my cousins. Diana Notify Administrator about this message?
