Belew/Beliew spelling change due to a family feud??? Is that true?

I have been told that my husband's family added the "i" to the Belew name as the result of a "family feud" among siblings. I think all of this happened around the mid to late 1800's. I have no idea what the disagreement was about but I would love to learn more. If anyone has any info on the spelling change (proven or unproven) please let me know. Our line goes through Rene/Renny Beliew > Zachariah Beliew > Samuel Beliew > Joseph James Monroe Beliew > Robert Alexander Beliew > Governor Aaron Beliew > Charlie Harry Beliew > etc.
Thanks,
Libby
