Felix

The townships in Ontario were surveyed and set out with cut stone markers in every 4th cornor. This was done by naval officers on half pay due to peace having broken out and them knowing navigation so well. There were so many lots in each concession, and the number system was lot x, concession y of the Township of Blunder in the County of Buss. These numbers have never changed although Township and County names may have. When an area was developed, a new survey was placed on top of the original township map and then the registry office created new books with a page for each lot on the numbered plan. Sometimes only a part of the original township lot went into a plan. Then, to seach for someone's ownership, you had to look at the books for the Plan and its lot and the book for the township and its lot to make sure you understood it all.

This is just a brief idea of how it worked in the past. Now the government is trying to get each person's individual land holdings surveyed and entered into the computer with a new number - sort of like a new book if you will. Within a very short period, every parcel of land will be identified and entered into the database and then the books with the original information will likely make their way to the archives where they will be photographed and the pictures stored in a database as well. Hopefully they will make it accessible to folk like ourselves so we can follow the history of the people and the history of the land.

Cheers

Harry
