Can someone tell me if the Jasper County records have indeed been thoroughly researched already for clues as to the Belcher family who lived there by the 1820s??? My family records indicate that the wife of my 4th gr-grandfather Sterling Mize (b.ca. 1801) was Nancy Belcher, later Nancy A. Mize, born ca. 1802 GA and died between 1870 and 1880 in Tallapoosa County, AL. We know that Sterling was in Jasper County between the years 1823 (when he was shown as an Ensign in the militia) and 1827 (when he was a fortunate drawer in the Land Lottery of that year). I can find no marriage record for this couple--which is not unusual for the time period. However, as many researchers will know already, there were several Belcher girls who married in Jasper during the time that Nancy and Sterling would have married. According to the 1830 (Harris County, GA)-1850 (Tallapoosa Co., AL) censuses, Sterling and Nancy were probably parents of two sons (who died young apparently) and at least seven daughters. The daughters bear the names of many of those other Belcher young ladies who married in Jasper County--I suspect Nancy named them for her sisters. The daughters included: (1) Catherine Mize (1827-1903) who married Yancey Thornton Gillum, (2) Frances Elizabeth Mize who married John B.R. Johnson, (3) Harriet Melissa Mize who married Daniel Hutcherson, (4)Rebecca Jane Mize, (5)Sarah M. Mize who married Seaborn M. Solley, (6) Nancy Mize who married Rev. John Colley, and (7) Mary E. Mize who married James M. Solley. I have researched in the Jasper County Courthouse once before but was looking for the Mize connections rather than the Belchers, and I found the personnel less than enthusiastic on the day of my visit! Any information or advice is appreciated! Steve Strickland, 1039 Seven Springs Circle, Marietta, GA 30068 Notify Administrator about this message?
