Sara, there is a really good book to give you ideas on how to find current day people called "Find Anyone Fast". There are lots of good tips in it. I have used it and it helped me find some cousins my mother wanted me to find. If the library doesn't have it. Try asking a bookstore to order it for you.
Good Luck!
P.s. I would also try to check out my dad's death certificate. If you know where he died, you just have to order it from the state capitol or the health dept usually. It should have information about his parents and birthplace etc. If you are trying to find out about your ancestors, also try to order your grandparents death certificates.
