Ref: P&BA-Len pg. 969-970. Obituary: Alfred Belcher died suddenly at his home in Rollin, on Saturday, March 8th, of apoplexy. Mr. Belcher was born in Genesee county, N.Y., June 1st, 1822. His father was a native of Connecticut, removing to New York when he had reached the age of manhood. In 1833 he came with his father to Michigan, and after a year's residence in Adrian township removed to Rollin, and entered 160 acres of government land. Of a family of nine children there are now but two living. Alfred, the subject of this sketch, was reared on the farm, and although his educational advantages were limited, he utilized every means of informing himself, and thus became a well informed, intelligent and respected citizen. In 1848, he was married to Miss Mary A. Rockwell. To them have been born four children, Salem M., Ella A., James and Stephen J. Salem died about two years ago. Ellen A. is the wife of Henry Page, a merchant in Burlington, Kas., James is married and has four children, living on a farm adjoining the homestead; Stephen J. is married and operates the old homestead. Mr. Belcher was an old veteran, enlisting in 1863 in a Mechanics Corps, and served with credit in the rebellion. Indeed, the family has an honorable soldier record, his father having taking part in the war of 1812, and his grandfather in the Revolution. Since the war, Mr. Belcher has devoted his energies to the carrying on of the farm, in which he has been successful. Of a quiet and somewhat retiring disposition, he was yet firm in his convictions, and always advocated what in his opinion was right. In his death the community loses a good citizen, and the family a beloved husband and father. Notify Administrator about this message?
