Seeking Grodno Ancestors
Posted by: Jeff Smith Date: October 09, 1999 at 14:27:58

This is a second attempt to post a message so if there's another ( incomplete) one, ignore it. I'm seeking to discover the true ancestral names of my paternal and maternal family from Grodno. Paternally, the name of my great uncle who emigrated in the late eighteen hundreds, was Hillule, believed to have been a translation of Gelula or something similar. His brother, my grandfather, took the name of Smith of all things. Maternally, the only name I know is JONES, dating back to my great grandfather. I've heard it might have been Yones but I've never found that name anywhere. Also, does anyone know of any existing records of births, deaths and marriages of Jews in Grodno in the 19th century?
