Info on Nesvizh and Kachanoviche, Miensk region
I recently found the ship manifest for my great grandfather Kazimer Bukrey at the Ellis Island website who came over in 1911.Kazimer died in September of 1960 and his sister in 1981.It was always our family belief that Kazimer was from Poland, someplace that sounded like Katvich and that his surname was Americanized when he came into Ellis. The town listed for Kazimer was Nesvizh in Russia, and his language was Polish.Upon some looking I found Nesvizh in Belarus as well as Kachanoviche just 4 miles away from Nesvizh.I have found some records for Nesvizh on the web, including 1905 land records which included Iosef and Antonina Skritskiy, the parents of Emilia Bukrey's (Kazimier's sister) husband Anthony Skrzycki. Many of the Skrzycki family are still in the Grand Rapids, MI area.Kazimer's mother was a Scholastica Kozlowski according to his social security application. In those same land records, I found records for a family of Kozlovitsh.Could this family be relatives of Scholastica? My family was Catholic and that matches that these families are listed as Christian. There are stories of how Emilia, Cha Cha as we knew her, went back home and smuggled money into the country to help the family left behind. How can I track down more information about these towns and possibly find relatives left behind in Belarus?
Thank you for any help!
Francesca
