Well, here is what I would be doing. I would get a copy of his birth certificate. Assuming he was born to a Catholic Family, even though his mother apparently was not married, I would then start asking the church in the town of birth for a baptismal certificate. It should list the godparents which were usually very close relatives to the parent. Often, it was the grandparents of the child. Did you tell me your father was still living? If not, I would go to the Social Security death index to see if I could find any clue there. You said you had birth certificate but you should be able to get a copy of his adoption record too. That would be an eye opener. I would also send an inquiry to the Van Buren Maine library. They have a genealogy section with a huge card file of all kinds of church information for St Bruno's church (the only church in Van Buren). Last I knew, their email address was nmt@morneault.lib.me.us

I'll keep looking but I think, without new information, we won't get too far.
