When the Ottoman Empire came apart as a result of its defeat, the Jewish community, led by Haim Bejerano (1920-1931), supported the successful Turkish effort to throw off the allied forces which were trying to place Turkish territories under non- Turkish rule; and participated in the Turkish War of Independence (1919- 1922) which, under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, led to the establishment of the Turkish Republic."
