My mother is also a Bejarano as well. I am also searching for relatives. They were from Gama, Colombia. All my life I had thought that the Bejarano name was an uncommon one. I have come to realized that it is not that uncommon. In the United States alone, there are close to 800 people that share the Bejarano name. I should know I wrote to all of them searching for relatives. In writing I have discovered that there are Bejarano families literally all over the world (Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Panama, Puerto Rico, El Salvador, Honduras, Sweden, Israel, Bolivia, Ecuador, Spain, Cuba). The Bejarano name originated in a very small town known as Bejar. It is located between Sevilla and Salamanca. The latter part of our last name was added during the Inquisition in order to convert it into a Christian name. Bejar was actually a Jewish last name to begin with. Till this day there is a monument in the town dedicated to the Bejaranos, that fell during Franco's civil war. It's twelve feet high and reads..."In memory of the Bejaranos that died at the Valle de los Caidos." Judging from the size of the monument, there must have been many killed. If you want to learn more about the history of the Bejarano name and see pictures of Bejar, there is a Bejarano website in Yahoo (Spanish version). German and Victor Bejarano are working towards putting together a genealogy of all the Bejarano families. Their goal is also to reunite all of them. I think this is a wonderful idea. Considering the letters, I have been receiving there are many who are searching for their relatives because they somehow have lost contact. German's e-mail address is gbejarano@movi.com.ar. I wish you well in your search and would like to help you. I have received many letters and have learned much. Please e-mail me. (gcmora@yahoo.com)
