According to Spanish Telefonica online, http://www.telefonica.es/index/pagblancas.html, there are 9 persons living in Bejar today who are registered in the Spanish phonebook and have Bejarano in their surname. These are: CESAREO BEJARANO GIL SANTIAGO BEJARANO MACIAS JOAQUIN BEJARANO MACIAS LORENZO BEJARANO RUFAU MARIANO BEJARANO RUFAU VALENTIN BEJARANO RUFAU RAIMUNDO BEJARANO BERGUIO MANUEL MARTIN BEJARANO MARIA GLORIA MARTIN BEJARANO We see that these names suggest 4 different fathers called Bejarano (who married someone called Gil, Macias, Rufau and Berguio respectively) and one mother called Bejarano (who married someone called Martin). In Spain everyone officially has two surnames, the first being the father's paternal surname and the second being the mother's paternal surname. It's exciting to consider the possibility that these inhabitants of Bejar descend from one or more (doubtlessly converso) Bejarano-branches which have always stayed in their (Jewish) patriarch's town. However, it can't be excluded apriori that even their particular branches spread to other towns or villages before returning to Bejar. Titus Rivas
