Hello Brian & Cynthia - This Herman Beitel was the son of George L. & Anna (Stotz) Beitel, & grandson of Christian F. & Catherina (Leibert) Beitel. Yes he's related to our line. The National Cemetery records actually have his grave listed in Section H (not 11) of the Chattanooga National Cemetery, Grave 11117. I have another reference that has him in the Nashville National Cemetery, but it's probably incorrect. You'd think residing in the area that I would have already visited the grave, but just haven't gotten to it.

I don't know if he was killed in battle or succumbed to an illness or injury. There exists a letter that he wrote home from Murfreesboro TN (!!) a short time before he died, but I have yet to view it.

One of our Civil War buffs ought to track down appropriate records in an attempt to find out what happened to him. I submitted a request for Herman's military pension file from the National Archives sometime back, but was informed that none existed.
