Acording to his birth certificate William Otto Behne was born on March 15, 1883 in Sudenburg - Magdeburg, 1f. Neüeweg, Deutschland. Where'd you get Homberg from? It's not on his birth certificate! And he was 9 when he came to America, not 17. He emmigrated with his mother, Selma Behne nee Damm and his three sisters - Vallie, Anna and Thelma, immediatly after the death of his father. Arrived N.Y. City (?) circa 1893. The copy of his birth certificate that he brought from Germany is dated March, 1893, and was obviously obtained for the purpose of immigration. Therefore he was still in Germany on that date, but left shortly after.

Adopted & Naturalized on August 11th, 1900 in Randolph County, City of Winchester, Indianna by his stepfather, Otto Scharffe, in order that he may gain the required U.S. citizenship to enlist in the U.S. Navy. (I found the record in Civil Order Book #51 page 333 and 334, in the Courthouse in Winchester.)

Traveled to Chicago, Ill. and enlisted in the Navy on August 15th, 1900, rate, Sandsman,
Later he became Electrician Second class aboard the U.S.S. New York (Armored Cruiser # 2, CA-2). Awarded the Philippine Campaign Medal for service abord the U.S.S. New York during the Philippine Insurrection Campaign of 1899 - 1902. Granted a Petty Officer's Appointment to Electrician 3rd Class on July 14th, 1904. Honorably discharged on August 14th, 1904. Full pay during period of enlistment: $263.42, averaging $40.00 per month. The anchor of his ship now on display at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

Married on July 14, 1906, Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio, to Bertha Hagerman 1888-1966, with:
Herbert 1908-1991
Reba 1911-1982
Selma (living)
William II 1915-1980
Freda 1918-1999
Theodore 1921-1977 (your father)
Donald 1923-1997
Neil (living)
Frank I (living)

His parent's names were Otto Adolf Behne and Selma Damm. Otto and his wife Selma also owned an apartment building or hotel in Sudenburg Magdeburg which consisted of about 40 units arranged in a square, with a livery stable in the center serving the tennants.

Wm. O. Behne Died on January 31, 1973, Austintown, Ohio.
Death age: 89 years old.
Buried on February 3, 1973, Jackson Cemetery, Coitsville, Mahoning County, Ohio.

Had you bothered to ask your own brother I could have told you this long ago. I maintain a genealogy database with over 470 Behnes, 3,750 other surnames and totaling well over 20,890 persons - all your relatives. And yes, your current and former spouse's families are both well represented.

Although Behne is a German name, with most Behnes originating in Prussia, ``Behen'' is an Irish name.
